The University of South Australia Teaching Innovation Unit presents the Teaching and Learning Breakfast Series 2021

Theme: Flourishing in a state of flux: digital learning, enabling pedagogy and supporting student engagement in the context of COVID-19

Presenter

Jennifer Stokes (UniSA) an award-winning educator, who specialises in digital media and enabling pedagogy. Jennifer is a Senior Lecturer who coordinates courses in digital and information literacy at UniSA College, Education Futures (University of South Australia).

Overview

The past year and a half has presented unprecedented challenges, and educators are striving to adapt to the complexity of supporting quality learning outcomes in an ongoing pandemic. This presentation will provide best practice solutions and enabling strategies for digital learning, which are designed to support effective student learning in the uncertain context of COVID-19. Through reflecting on lessons learned in course design over the past two decades, Jennifer Stokes will share tips and tools which work for contemporary students. These strategies have been applied to attain outstanding student outcomes in enabling and online courses at the University of South Australia, and have also been used to underpin advice shared to commencing students via The Conversation (Stokes 2021). These design-based approaches focus on making the most of technology, valuing the strengths students bring, and building inclusive learning communities. Grounded in Enabling Pedagogies (Stokes 2014) and Universal Design for Learning (CAST 2011), these useful tips will help educators prepare to pivot between modes, and support students to flourish in the current state of flux.
