Development of National Guidelines in Australia for Improving Student Outcomes in Online Education #USQSalon

Dr Cathy Stone — The University of Newcastle and the NCSEHE

During 2016 an Australian research project was conducted under the sponsorship of the NCSEHE, with the aim of improving student retention and academic success in online education.

The study sought the combined wisdom of practitioners, both academic and professional, directly involved in online education, on ways to most effectively engage, teach and support online students. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 151 members of staff across 16 higher education institutions and the findings have informed a set of National Guidelines for Australian institutions for improving student outcomes in online learning.

The salon will run from 11.00 am – 12.00 pm AEST at the Toowoomba Studio Y103, and live streaming will be available.

About the Presenter

Dr Cathy Stone is an independent consultant and researcher in the field of post-secondary student equity, retention and success. As an active researcher, Cathy’s publications focus particularly on the experiences of mature age, First-in-Family and online students. Cathy has previously held senior management roles in student support services at the University of Newcastle where she is currently a Conjoint Associate Professor in Social Work, as well as with Open Universities Australia which developed her strong interest in the online student experience. In 2016, Cathy undertook further research into improving outcomes for online students, as an Equity Fellow with the NCSEHE at Curtin University, where she continues as an Adjunct Fellow.
