Widening Participation and Outreach (WPO) at the University of Sydney aims to increase access and participation in higher education for young people from low socioeconomic status, regional and remote areas and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.
In 2019, WPO will be delivering a re-invigorated educational engagement program, extending opportunities for secondary school students from greater western Sydney and regional NSW to engage with re-imagined, immersive on-campus experiences, academic capacity building and skills enrichment activities in schools, communities and through digital outreach. The WPO program continues to include innovative professional learning opportunities for teachers and school leaders.
The launch event will highlight key 2019 program directions, give voice to the impact of the program, celebrate new and existing partnerships and bring together key cross-sector stakeholders in support of the University of Sydney’s Widening Participation Strategy and broader commitment to ensuring the brightest and most promising students, regardless of their cultural or social background can thrive and realise their potential through higher education.
This event will be held at Fairfield City Council’s Whitlam Library in Cabramatta, a long-standing community partner of WPO and a community hub for the local area.
Guest speakers will include Lisa O’Brien (CEO, The Smith Family) and Mitchell Ha (Learning for Life scholarship recipient and final year Bachelor of Education student at the University of Sydney.
Russ the Story Bus, illustrated by Sophie Beer, will also be on-site for young children to explore, courtesy of Sydney Writers’ Festival.
